What is coaching?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership.
We all have goals to reach, challenges to overcome and times when we feel stuck. Executive coaches support you on your journey, provide accountability, help you uncover blind spots and view situations with fresh perspectives – to help you discover new opportunities to achieve greater fulfillment.
Rather than providing you with a recipe for what to do, I’ll partner with you to identify your core strengths, values, and purpose, then map out a plan to make it come to life. You’ll do the work, and I’ll serve as your co-pilot.
How does coaching differ from therapy?
As an executive coach, I focus on helping you with your professional and personal goals. I use different tools and techniques to help you gain clarity and fresh perspective to achieve those goals. I’m qualified to help you work through blocks and saboteurs, and identify the actions you’ll take to uncover and unleash your full potential.
A therapist discusses past life events and their impact on your current life. Therapists are generally recommended if you are experiencing mental illness or unable to function in everyday life.
How would I benefit from coaching? What’s in it for me?
We all have goals we want to reach, hurdles to overcome, and moments when we feel stuck. Coaching can benefit anyone seeking change and growth. Change is hard, and coaches like me provide you with a safe space to reflect, explore, and work through your challenges so you can feel empowered to take the next steps. Coaching provides you with support and accountability in service of learning, change, and growth.
What makes your approach unique from other career and leadership coaches?
We take a holistic, strategic approach to support your vision, goals, and objectives. By asking powerful questions, we help you gain new insights into your desired outcome – for example:
- What do you really want?
- What are your most important values?
- What’s the real challenge here for you?
- What will you do next?
Our practice is grounded in 20+ years of business experience in the tech industry – of being in the trenches and leading through real business challenges at B2B/B2C Fortune 500 firms and startups. We’ve experienced real pressures of meeting sales goals and customer requirements.
Our mission is driven by multiple career transitions, having pivoted five times, and changed industries six times. With this perspective, we guide clients through unforeseen challenges, pitfalls, and happy surprises that can emerge from their own pivots.
We have a pulse on what’s going on in the industry based on current experience working with clients in diverse markets.
We have a deep understanding of the nuances of cross-cultural corporate dynamics based on our experience living in three countries and working with six global cultures. We help clients navigate, lead, and collaborate successfully with global teams.
Rather than provide clients with a “recipe” for what to do, we partner with them to identify their core strengths, values, and mission, then map out a plan to make it come to life. We’ll explore together.
What qualifications should I consider when hiring a coach?
- Types of certification or training the coach has – while there are no mandatory licenses or certifications required to practice as a coach, the International Coaching Federation (ICF) is a global organization that certifies executive coaches. The ICF accreditation is the gold standard and ensures that the coach has completed rigorous educational and practice requirements from an accredited school. Learn more.
- Chemistry with your coach – this is a key element that needs to be considered prior to signing on with a new coach. It is important to feel comfortable, safe, and that you can hold open, honest conversations with your coach prior to retaining their services. Contact us to book a free 30-minute sample chemistry session.
- Does the coach maintain strict confidentiality? While this seems obvious, in cases where a company is paying for executive coaching services on an employee’s behalf, the coach should not be sharing information with HR, your manager, or anyone else without your permission, per ICF ethics rules. The only exception is if your coach believes that there is illegal activity, a subpoena has been served, a court order has been issued, or that you or anyone else is at risk of being harmed. It is important for clients to establish this upfront.
- Does the coach seem curious and engaged with you, and do they listen more than they speak? Effective coaching requires listening deeply and actively. The coach’s role is to ask powerful questions to provoke fresh thoughts and insights from the client. It is not their role to give advice or tell you what they think you should do – unless that is agreed upon in your co-designed agreement prior to starting the engagement.
- Is the coach transparent and upfront on pricing? Be sure to discuss all fees and out-of-pocket expenses in advance.
- Is the coach willing to co-create accountability in a way that works for you? Good, effective coaching is a partnership. This may involve challenging you, at times. There are many ways to be held accountable and I will work with clients to determine what is best.
- What is the coach’s background? While many coaches come from a Human Resources or psychology background, others come from a business background. It is important to consider if this matters to you or not.
