How do you tell your story after a career setback?
Last week I met a client who was laid off 6 months ago and felt stuck, unable to progress in his job search. Another client resigned from a role due to a toxic environment.
A setback doesn’t define your story — how you frame it does.
If you’ve experienced a layoff or resigned due to misalignment, it’s natural to feel the need to explain or justify. But in networking conversations and interviews, less explanation is often more powerful.
Acknowledge the transition briefly and confidently — then pivot forward.
Focus on what the experience clarified for you:
⭐What kind of problems do you want to solve?
⭐What environments bring out your best work?
⭐Where do you want to create impact next?
Use strong narratives like:
🎯 “That experience clarified where I do my best work…”
🎯 “I gained exposure to…”
🎯 “That reinforced my interest in…”
This shift moves you from reactive to intentional. And makes your story human and meaningful with self-awareness and direction.
✨Your credibility doesn’t come from avoiding setbacks — it comes from how clearly you’ve grown from them and where you’re headed next.
